7 Cleaning Chores You Can Do With Common Natural Products

Let’s get back to cleaning 101 to see the best all-natural cleaning products and their benefits. You probably have non-toxic and eco-friendly supplies like salt, white vinegar, baking soda, castile soap, and hydrogen peroxide. You can use plant-based products like essential oils, herbs, or citrus fruit for some tasks too. Some advantages of using green cleaning products are that, generally, they are eco-friendly and harmless for your family’s health. Read this blog to learn some typical applications for your home!

1. Mold removing

This is a non-toxic solution for mold: spray undiluted white vinegar on the surface until the mold is entirely wet, then let it rest for two hours. Later, scrub the area until it’s clean and wipe it with warm water. Adding some drops of essential oil to the vinegar will make it smell more refreshing.

2. Wood polishing

Olive oil is an excellent base for a wood cleaner and polisher. Add two parts of vinegar for one part of oil, mix some lemon juice, and finish with a few drops of lavender essential oil to obtain a fresh smell.  Shake the mixture before spraying it on the wood, then rub it with a cloth.

3. Window cleaning

You can make a window-cleaning solution by adding equal parts of water and white vinegar. Put the mixture into a spray bottle and shake it up. You can swap the vinegar for alcohol to make it easier to evaporate on the window, but consider that alcohol is highly flammable.

4. Carpet stains

You don’t need a specialized product to remove the stains on the carpet. First, cover all the stained areas with baking soda, then spray them with a mix of equal parts of white vinegar and water to make the baking soda react. Let it rest for a couple of hours before scrubbing the surface with a sponge or brush. Wait until the next day to vacuum the residue.

5. Sink cleaning

When cleaning the sink, it’s better to use odor-absorbing products like baking soda or salt to prevent bad smells from lingering. Put in the sink drain half a cup of baking soda and then a cup of white vinegar. Let the mixture fizz for several minutes, and then drip several cups of boiling water carefully in the sink.

6. Kitchen cleaning

Mix a cup of hot water with several tablespoons of baking soda and shake it well. You will have a cleaner with deodorant benefits to use on your fridge, sink faucet, or stainless steel.

7. Toilet cleaning

Pour one cup of water and half a cup of both baking soda and castile soap into the container and shake it well until the liquids blend entirely.  You can add a few drops of essential oil for a pleasant, natural aroma. Spray it thoroughly and let it rest before scrubbing. Then disinfect the toilet, spraying hydrogen peroxide and letting it sit for a few minutes before flushing.

Some considerations

  • When making DIY products, we recommend you always label the ingredients you mixed and try to use eco-friendly containers, like glass bottles.
  • The products we mention in this blog are non-toxic, but if you use other cleaning supplies like chlorine bleach, you must be careful mixing them. Double-check what you can and cannot mix before trying it.
  • Disinfecting is a little more delicate because viruses like COVID-19 and some bacteria need a harsher product as opposed to most eco-friendly products. If you are not sure if natural cleaners will work, go for the approved and certified options.
